What is the Barclays Stockbrokers Funds List?

Our new Funds List builds on the extensive range of tools we already offer to help you find the right funds for you.

Whether you’re just starting out and want the professional expertise of a fund manager to select the underlying investments, or you’re an experienced investor looking to diversify your portfolio or gain access to an overseas market, funds are likely to be a good option. Our Funds List contains the funds we believe have established strong track records, operate well defined investment processes and are the most likely to provide consistent returns compared to their peers. It covers a range of sectors and is designed as a tool to be used alongside the research tools and ratings provided in our Funds Research Centre.

The Funds List is chosen using the selection criteria set out below, and draws on the process that has been used within the Barclays Private Banking business for a number of years. Many excellent funds aren’t on the list and they may actually be better suited to your individual investment objectives or appetite to risk. It’s important that you consider your investment strategy carefully when selecting funds and use the fund factsheets, the Key Investor information Documents (KIIDs) and independent ratings to validate any choices. But if you’re trying to work out where to begin your research, we think you’ll find our Funds List a good place to start.

Please bear in mind that the future is impossible to predict and despite our best efforts the funds on our list may perform worse than expected and you may lose money.

How are the funds chosen for the Barclays Stockbrokers Funds List?

The Barclays Stockbrokers Funds List seeks to identify funds across a wide range of sectors - covering different asset types e.g. shares and bonds as well as different geographical markets – and in each case meeting the risk / return criteria that we adopt. We also consider the consistency of the fund manager’s approach and the returns that they deliver. To do this we undertake an in-depth assessment of the investment team’s quality, experience, process structure and discipline. This is an ongoing process to ensure that funds continue to comply with these requirements.

Only those funds which achieve a prescribed minimum level are put forward to the next stage which includes extensive due diligence analysis. All decisions are taken by a team of investment professionals to ensure that decisions are consistent, based on factual analysis and to remove individual bias.

All funds, even those selected for our Funds List, can fall in value as well as rise, and you may get back less than you invested even if you hold it for 5 – 10 years which is the time horizon funds are designed to perform over.

The Barclays Stockbrokers Funds List is not a personal recommendation and if you’re unsure about the risks or feel you need help choosing a fund, you should get independent advice.

How to use the Barclays Stockbrokers Funds List?

The Funds List should be one of a number of sources of information that you use to select an investment. The idea is that it helps you to narrow down the huge number of funds available to a small number that you can research in detail, using the tools on our Funds Research Centre such as the crown ratings and the performance data.

Performance is obviously important – but how any investment has performed historically is not necessarily a good guide to how they will perform in the future.  You should also consider other similar funds and assess whether they are better suited to your portfolio.

Important information

The value of funds can go down as well as up, so you could get back less than you invested.

We don’t give financial advice, so you need to be comfortable that any fund you select will meet your needs. If you’re unsure whether an investment is right for you, please seek independent financial advice.

The risk and reward profile (SRRI) on the KIID is calculated by the Fund Manager in line with EU rules. The indicator is not a measure of the risk of you losing your investment but describes how much the value of the fund has moved up and down in the past (i.e. volatility) and is not necessarily a guide to the future risk and reward of the fund. Funds are ranked from 1 to 7; the higher the rank the greater the potential reward but the greater the risk of losing money. The category shown is not a target or guarantee and may shift over time. The lowest category does not mean risk-free. When purchasing a fund you must read the relevant KIID.

FE Crown Ratings are quantitative ratings ranging from 1-5 designed to help you identify funds which have displayed superior performance in terms of stock picking, consistency and risk control. A single Financial Express (FE) Crown Rating reflects lowest tier and suggests the fund has failed to impress on the above terms, while a five FE Crown Rating reflects the highest tier and identifies a fund which they think is of superior quality.
